Herbs For AthletesHerbs for Athletes is dedicated to the serious athlete. And the not-so-serious. And the downright lazy. And nuns. Pets. Anyone who cares about health, and understands that doctors don't pay off huge student loans, mortgages, fine cars and country club dues by keeping their patients healthy. Trust me, I'm not a doctorI do believe that most doctors went to medical school with good intentions. But come on, we have the most expensive healthcare in the world, by far, and we're what, 37th in quality of healthcare? "Dead" last of 19 leading industrialized nations in preventable deaths due to treatable conditions? It's not just doctors, of course. Big Pharma and the insurance industry are the true villians. But it's doctors, who supposedly took an oath to "do no harm", who have effectively demonized natural and alternative healthcare in this country. There are notable exceptions, of course, like Al Sears, Russell Blaylock, Jonathan Wright, and Joseph Mercola, but the overwhelming majority of doctors simply find that pushing drugs and surgery is easier and pays better. And if you thought drugs and surgery were the answer you wouldn't still be reading this. Medical schools don't teach nutrition, and doctors don't want to know. Because that don't pay the bills...
..........Upton Sinclair If you want to be healthy, really healthy, you have to assume the responsibility for it. Don't think for a minute that your doctor, the food or drug industries, or any government agency is looking out for you. They're not. I've been using and researching herbs and nutritional supplements for over 30 years. I'm 59, haven't seen a doctor (except for lasik surgery) or used a prescription drug in over 20 years. I'm in near-perfect health, and survived 25+ years of distance running with no residual physical issues. Good nutrition is the only reasonable explanation. I know what's worked for me. Maybe something on this site will work for you too.
Why herbs?..........Hippocrates Because herbs are food. Awesome food. Medicinal food. With all the nutrition and healing properties nature intended. Because the typical diet is a joke. If you can afford organic, you'll avoid frankenfoods and a few of the hundreds of toxins that you eat, drink, breath, and absorb every day. But you'll still fall far short of your nutritional needs. Especially if you're an athlete. Because athletes sweat out essential minerals and other nutrients at the very time that they're creating mountains of oxygen free-radicals and subjecting their bodies to enormous stress. Because athletes require more and better nutrition than couch potatoes. Never forget the lesson of the Jim Fixx tragedy. His blockbuster "The Complete Book of Running" in 1977 (then the best-selling non-fiction hardcover book ever) was largely responsible for the running craze that followed. Jim Fixx believed that running was in itself enough to insure good health. Jim Fixx ran 60 to 70 miles a week for 12+ years. He died of a massive heart attack while running in July of '84 at the age of 52. Had Jim Fixx believed as strongly in herbs and nutrition he probably wouldn't have suffered blockages of 95 percent, 85 percent and 50 percent in his three main arteries. Today the environment is far more toxic than in 1984, and our diets are, like I said, a joke. There has never been a greater need for real nutrition and herbs for athletes.
