AstragalusAstragulus is a potent herb that has been used by Chinese herbalists for centuries for conditions including:
Christopher Allison writes in "Powerful and Unusual Herbs from the Amazon and China": "Astragalus was originally used in China for a variety of reasons including immune system support, diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure. Dr. Mauligit of Texas University found it helped to restore immune function in cancer patients. Astragalus helps to invigorate vital energy, drain pus, reduce swelling and strengthen the spleen. It is helpful for lingering diarrhea. It has been shown to augment interferon response to viruses. It is a good herb for chronic low energy, weak lungs, shortness of breath, and kidney and bladder infections that do not respond to diuretics. Astragalus helps strengthen digestion, improve metabolism and lift prolapsed organs. It can also enhance fertility and libido." According to Michael Tierra, N.D., in "Planetary Herbology", the herb helps strengthen digestion, raise metabolism, strengthen the immune system and promote wound healing. Chinese ResearchChinese clinical studies indicate that astragulus may be effective in the prevention of colds, as well as reducing the severity and duration of common cold symptoms. Other research suggests that it may be effective in cases where the immune system has been weakened by chemicals or radiation. Researchers have reported that cancer patients receiving astragulus extracts had twice the survival rate of patients receiving only standard therapies. It appears to increase interferon production and enhance NK and T cell function, helping the body resist viral conditions such as hepatitis, AIDS and cancer. Roger Lewis, Chartered Herbalist, writes in "Astragalus in Complementary Cancer Therapy": "Recently I had the opportunity to witness the remarkably positive effects of raw Astragulus root in small doses on seven consecutive dogs with respect to papillomatous viral warts. Several cases were unresponsive to medical intervention, and most included the opportunity for me to witness the wart(s), the progression of therapy, and follow up with the owners. Briefly, all seven dogs experienced complete remission within fourteen days." Again citing Roger Lewis: "it is widely believed by herbalists that Astragalus is especially conducive to synergistic combinations with other herbs." SafetyRoger Lewis continues: "To the best of my knowledge, herbalists regard Astragulus as extremely benign and safe even in children, regardless of the concomitant therapies (eg. chemotherapy) and in spite of the presence of serious diseases (eg. cancer and renal failure)."
