IporuruIporuru (Alchornia castaneifolia), is a woody brush that can be harvested only in the Amazon's dry season because it spends the rainy season underwater. The active medicinal chemicals in its bark are only present during the dry season. Christopher Allison writes in "Powerful and Unusual Herbs from the Amazon and China": "Ipururu is used by the indigenous peoples of Peru for relieving symptoms of osteoarthritis. It helps to increase flexibility in movement and range of motion."
Medicinal PropertiesAccording to Leslie Taylor in her book "The Healing Power of Rainforest Herbs
Traditional and Current UsesLeslie Taylor continues: "One of the more popular preparations is an alcoholic bark tincture used to treat rheumatism, arthritis, colds, and muscle pains. It is well known to the indigenous peoples of Peru for relieving the symptoms of osteoarthritis and helps flexibility in movement and range of motion... The pain relieving properties... are also used topically by indigenous people. Crushed leaves are rubbed on painful joints as an analgesic and beaten into a paste and applied to painful stingray wounds... Currently Ipururu is gaining popularity among athletes and North American health practitioners due to the properties of Iporuru which provide support of muscle and joint structure."
