Sangre De Drago

Blood of the Dragon

Sangre de Drago (also known as Sangre de Grado) is a fast growing tree found throughout the tropics and the South American Amazon Rainforest.

This tree is distinguished by the dark red sappy resin that oozes when the trunk is cut, much like a bleeding wound.

Sangre de Drago is a good example of morphism - the relationship between the shape of a plant and its use in the human body. The blood-red resin is used very effectively to stop bleeding, and the heart-shaped leaves suggest the benefits of its potent antioxidant properties in preventing cardiovascular diseases.

Indigenous Uses

The indigenous peoples of the Amazon use Sangre de Drago extensively. Applied to cuts, scrapes, or blisters it almost immediately gels to seal the wound. It halts the pain and itching of bites and stings within minutes, while reducing the swelling and redness.

The indigenous people also use a diluted form of sangre de grado orally for gastrointestinal disorders, gastritis, gastric ulcer, intestinal infections, colitis and parasites.

Gastric ulcers are common in certain areas of South America, due to the high incidence of Helicobacter Pylori and other microbes and parasites.

Scientific Research

Scientific studies have documented the benefits of sangre de grado on gastric ulcers. Concentrations consistent with indigenous use were determined effective in treating the ulcers while reducing helicobacter pylori as well as the production of other inflammatory compounds.

Another study revealed that nearly 90% of the dry weight of sangre de drago sap is proanthocyanidin (OPC), one of the most potent antioxidants ever discovered.

Kenneth Jones concluded in the Dec. 1st, 2003 Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine:

"The results of in vitro and in vivo studies largely support the majority of ethnomedical uses of sangre de drago including the treatment of diarrhea, wounds, tumors, stomach ulcers, herpes infection, the itching, pain and swelling of insect bites, and other conditions.

Clinical studies of sangre de grado products have reported positive results in the treatment of traveler's and watery diarrhea and the symptoms of insect bites..."

A U.S. based pharmaceutical company has developed two drugs containing antiviral constituents extracted from the resin and bark of sangre de grado. One is an oral treatment for respiratory viral infections, the other a topical treatment for herpes.

At least four U.S. patents have been filed on sangre de drago resin. Two pertain to an alkaloid for its use in wound healing. The other two describe methods of isolation of proanthocyanidin for treatment of respiratory viral infections, influenza A, B, and C, and the Herpes Simplex Virus.
